Young, determined and already has achieved a lot. Benjámin Szilágyi stands out not only on the handball court with his talent and determination, but also possesses an exemplary personality off the field. We talked with the OTP-Bank PICK Szeged player about the beginnings of his sports career, his greatest successes, maintaining personal balance, and what drives him forward day by day. An inspiring story where 'Dream, humility, patience' is not only a motto but also a life philosophy.
Sport Career – Beginnings and Present
How did your handball career start? When did you first feel “this is my path”?
In 2012, while watching the London Olympics with my father, I realised that I wanted to choose this sport. That was the moment I first felt this was my path.
What’s it like to play in such a strong team like OTP-Bank PICK Szeged?
It is a huge honour. Years of persistent and hard work led me to be part of the adult team.
Who was the player or role model who inspired you in the early days?
I watched many players and tried to master their best qualities or most successful shots. If I had to suddenly mention a few names, I would definitely mention my current teammate, Sostaric, and also Gajić – it is a great honour that the latter now also supports my career as my manager.
Do you have any pre-match rituals?
I think every player has some kind of ritual before a match. I usually have pasta for lunch and drink a double espresso two hours before the game.
Private Life – Benji Off the Field
Are family and friends important to you? How much can you include them in your sporty life?
Both are very important to me, and I try to spend quality time with everyone, whether it's having coffee or a family lunch.
If you weren’t a handball player, what do you think you would be now?
Honestly, I’m interested in a lot of things. Thanks to my brother, I got a bit of a taste of the stock market, which also seems exciting. My mom and dad are entrepreneurs, so I would probably start my own business.
Do you have any special hobbies or passions that not many people know about?
I love travelling, dining well, fishing with friends, and programming with my partner. These are what relax me the most.
The Future – Plans, Dreams, Goals
What do you consider the greatest achievement of your career so far?
There have been several such moments. Few know, but I also played beach handball, and we achieved a European Championship runner-up position with the youth national team. Additionally, it was a great experience when, playing on loan with NEKA, we drew against Veszprém. And of course, this year's historic victory against Kielce is also a huge achievement for me.
Do you want to play abroad one day? Or do you imagine your future at home?
That is still the music of the future. I am currently contracted in Szeged until 2026, but I am not closed to opportunities abroad either. We will see what life brings.
What would you say to young people who are just starting in sports and look up to you?
Three words: Dream. Humility. Patience. And one more thing: always believe in yourself – even when things don’t go the way you want.
In Conclusion
Do you have a motto or quote that accompanies you throughout your career?
Dream, humility, and patience – I think these are the three most important words in professional sports. These three words are also tattooed on my hand.
How would you like fans to remember you?
I fought the hardest on the field.
