Nowadays, overweight and obesity are increasingly becoming a major problem across the Western world—and unfortunately, Hungary is no exception. According to the latest Eurostat data, our country is the second most overweight nation in the European Union. Approximately 60% of the population is overweight, and 24% of them fall into the category of morbid obesity.

What lies behind being overweight?

  • Unhealthy diet: In recent decades, the food market has been flooded with fast foods, processed foods, and sugary drinks. These are not only easily accessible but in many cases cheaper than healthy alternatives.

  • Sedentary lifestyle: Desk jobs, the constant presence of technological devices, and little physical activity all contribute to a caloric surplus.

  • Stress and mental burden: Modern life is stressful, and we often try to compensate for tension with food. Thus, after a hard day, we are more inclined to seek some kind of calorie-rich “reward.”

What are the consequences?

Obesity is not just a cosmetic issue but can also cause serious health problems. Being overweight increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and numerous other health conditions. Besides, it has social and economic implications. Overweight people often face prejudice and workplace discrimination, and the healthcare system bears a significant burden due to their treatment.

What can we do about it?

The first step is to consciously pay attention to our eating and exercise habits. There is no need to immediately start extreme diets, but with small changes – such as incorporating more vegetables, fruits, and regular exercise – significant results can be achieved.

Additionally, it is important to talk about this issue and support each other in achieving a healthier lifestyle. Changes should be made not only at the individual level but also at the community level: more exercise-promoting programs, nutritional reforms in schools, and community sports opportunities could help in developing a healthier, fitter society.

Why is sport important? Exercise is the key to a healthy life

The role of sports today goes far beyond physical activity – it has become a lifestyle, a community experience, and one of the main pillars of a healthy life. People increasingly recognise that sports are not just about training muscles but also play a key role in maintaining our mental and emotional well-being. Let's see why sports are so important at every age and stage of life, especially when the challenges of modern society can lead to a sedentary lifestyle.

Concluding thoughts

To stay healthy and fit, regular exercise and proper nutrition are crucial. We should strive to include as much fresh fruit and vegetables in our diet as possible, as these are full of fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants that support our body's optimal functioning. Moderation in meat consumption is also important: choose white meat, such as chicken or turkey, more often, as these are less burdensome on the body than red meats, like beef. By paying attention to our diet and staying active, we can contribute to our long-term health and well-being.

Take a small step for your health today – because it's worth it!
